Sexual Health-Men and Women: What is Sexual Health

While there are many opinions as to what ones’ sexual health actually consists of, the World Wide Web offers a superb definition: “Sexual health refers to the many factors that impact sexual function and reproduction.  These factors include a variety of physical, mental, and emotional issues.  Disorders that affect any of these factors can impact a person’s physical and emotional health, as well as his or her relationships and self image.”

Sexual health is an issue that needs to be a concern of both women as well as men.  A mans’ sexual health can be impacted by disorders that affect the penis and testes.  Some of these disorders include, but are not limited to:

  • Priapism-this is a condition wherein the penis stays in an erect position for longer than 4 hours.  It is not associated with sexual arousal, and is caused when blood flows into the penis and is not adequately drained.  Priapism can be caused by many things including drug or alcohol abuse, certain medications, spinal cord problems or injuries, blood diseases and injury to the genitals.  It is normally treated by draining the blood from the penis by using a small needle.
  • Balantis-this condition causes the head of the penis to become inflamed, and is often seen in males who are not circumcised, or in those with poor hygiene.  It is normally treated with an oral antibiotic or antifungal cream.

Other conditions that may affect a man’s sexual health include phimosis, paraphimosis, penile cancer, Peyronie’s disease, as well as sexually transmitted diseases.  Many sexual health conditions, when not treated properly, can lead to infertility and have other adverse effects on a man’s sexual well being.

Women’s sexual health also has many factors that can cause problems, just as the men’s factors do with them.  Some of the diseases and conditions that can play a role in a woman’s sexual health include, but is not limited to the following:

  • Fibroids
  • Endometriosis
  • Infertility
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Unplanned pregnancy
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Cervical cancer
  • Pre-menstrual syndrome
  • Absence of a menstrual period
  • Yeast Infections
  • Uterine abnormalities
  • Hormone imbalances

It is easy to see that women have more to be concerned about when it comes to sexual health.  This is due to the fact that women have many internal sexual organs, as well as external ones, while men only have two.

The best source of knowledge about sexual health will be a trusted physician.  Men who have questions, or who may be experiencing problems should consult with an urologist, while women should seek advice concerning their sexual health from their gynecologist.

Since there are so many different symptoms that can occur with sexual health problems, it is important to be open and discuss with the physician exactly what is going on.  Many symptoms can be related to a number of different sexual health problems, and a proper diagnosis depends on the patient, as well as the physician.

Taking care of one’s sexual health is part of a total well being program.  If there exists a sexual health problem that is ignored, the condition can grow worse, and begin to affect the sufferers’ daily life.  Not to mention that it can be mentally and emotionally draining as well, which can, and often times does, lead to depression.

This is why so many women who are infertile are also depressed, as infertility can be a problem that lasts for many years, and sometimes the problem that is causing the infertility cannot be treated.  Many women feel hopeless in this situation, like they are not in control of their bodies.  A persons’ sexual health must be taken care of, and should never be ignored when a problem presents itself.
