Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder SymptomsReasonPost Traumatic Stress happens when a person is witness to disastrous occurrences like death and havoc caused by natural disasters, terrorist incident, violent personal assaults etc. The shock is beyond the tolerance level of the person which snaps the normal emotional balance system causing stress. CharacteristicsFlashbacks and nightmares become common to the person experiencing the stress as and when there is some incidence relating to the past incident. At times, a cinema or a personal comment or even the appearance of a person will cause the trauma. A person who is not familiar of the person’s past will never easily understand what the patient is going through; at times it may appear stupid, but the agony is acute and is spearing through the person’s heart. The mind of such a person does not work with its reason at all, during such times. The related symptoms are depression, faltering memory and cognitive problems and other related to mental health. We all have suffered Believe it or not, we all suffer from some trauma in our lifetime which lingers in our memory. When you think that a person is behaving strangely, spare a moment for him to think that it is a result of some trauma. While one can understand the trauma of a rape victim, we do not understand the trauma of a grown up person who has undergone considerable verbal assault by somebody most dear which makes him/her intolerant towards a single offensive word. Such person are termed as quarrelsome. But the actual reaction in that patient is to stop the offender in such a way that he/she can not open his/her mouth to utter any more words. Da Costa’s syndromeThe disorder is so severe that the person will hardly withstand the adjustment needed in family life, occupation and the vcauses are frequent job change, divorce etc. This is known as “Da Costa’s Syndrome.” Duration of sufferingPeople sometimes forget the trauma within days. Some others have it engraved in their blood to surface time and again. The remissions are mild to severe depending upon the person’s mental sturdiness. ResearchTo know the root cause of the disorder, which may surface after a long period, researchers are taking help of structured interviews and questions that can help in assessing one’s physiological condition. Some people who experience greater stress, unpredictability, uncontrollability, victimization and betrayal are likely to suffer some or other kinds of traumatic stress. A person who changes lifestyle after certain age may ingrain guilt, stigmatization or self-hatred which may cause post traumatic stress after subconsciously defining something or other as guilt. TreatmentThere is no treatment except healing with time. But doctors use cognitive-behavioral therapy and exposure therapy. In this, the patient is expected to recount the experiences over and over again. The patient is tried to relive the experience slowly and is supported to get over it. It takes Herculean patience and extra-ordinary skills to handle the patient. In case of other disasters the person is given reason to let it go instead of clutching it to hurt him over and over. Various drugs are also used. Cognitive behavioral therapy is more effective than drug therapy. What others have contributed to this page? No contribution yet.
