Health Care Professionals

Qualities of a good doctor

Selecting a doctor is one of the most important decisions a person can make.  Do seek a health care professional that is competent, professionally trained, friendly, patient and technologically savvy.

Communication

Your health care provider should be an excellent communicator. This medical expert should be willing to answer all questions that may arise. The doctor you choose should never demonstrate irritation or frustration when you need information or ask questions.

Doctor references

Most people select a doctor following the recommendation of family and peers. This is a popular and time-honored method.  However, you should also consider the references of your doctor by confirming their competence within the established medical community.

Appropriate references

It is important to know if a medical board has certified your doctor. It is particularly important to find out if their medical license has been suspended. It there is a record of suspension, you should discover the reason that caused the suspension. This information is a public record.  Additionally, you should ensure that your doctor is listed with a government agency or medical board who supervises and regulates standards of care.

Seeing a specialist

Some doctors, such as ophthalmologist, podiatrists, gerontologists, or physicians of internal medicine, require additional board certification. Board certification indicates that these individuals have received training in a specific medical field.

For example, specialists exist to care for diabetic needs, diseases of the heart, mental health, and reproductive health.  Other specialists do exist, and all specialists require a referral from a hospital or general practitioner prior to receiving care.

Cost of care

Patients must consider how they will afford health care. You should note how care would be paid for through an insurance plan.  You should also consider accepted forms of payment. For instance, not all doctors accept credit cards or personal cheques.

Convenience

Accessibility and convenience affect the selection process. How will you get to the doctor’s office? If you do not drive, you might consider the ease of acquiring public transportation to the venue. When you see a doctor, you should also note if laboratory work is completed on the premises.

General practitioners

It may be difficult to understand which medical services are appropriate for your needs.  Medical specialists will require a referral from your general practitioner. Thus, when organizing your medical team, be sure to enlist the services of a general practitioner. These doctors do not focus on any one area of medicine. Family doctors, on the other hand, provide care for all family members without regard to age-specific needs.

The first visit

Your initial visit with a general practitioner is a vital step.  Many patients are confused about the goals of this introductory visit.  At this time, the doctor will create a general portrait of your overall health.

The doctor may also seek information about close family members, including parents and siblings.  You should bring your past medical records to this visit. Alternatively, your past health care professional may provide your current doctor with your file in advance of the initial appointment.

Provide your doctor with a list of all current medications. This includes prescriptions, over-the counter drugs, vitamins and health care supplements.

Help your doctor

The relationship between you and your doctor is as productive as the communication. Do provide as much information as possible. Answer all medical questions truthfully.  If you provide inaccurate information, you will not receive adequate care, which may negatively influence your future long-term health.

Summary

The doctor-patient relationship is a critical partnership. If you research your doctor’s credentials and provide honest background information, you will proactively improve the quality of your self-managed health care.
