Fibromyalgia Syndrome - Information on symptoms, causes, treatment and relief of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia syndrome is a condition that gives rise to pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons. It is a widespread disease the cause of which is still unknown. Affected people report pain all over the body with their muscles either twitching or burning. The condition leaves the affected persons drained of all energy.

Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is characterized by sharp shooting pains and deep muscular aches. The pain is frequently accompanied by an intense burning sensation. The pain is felt more in the mornings. Fibromyalgia is also characterized by fatigue that varies from person to person and can be mild or severe. The affected person feels heavy and is unable to perform his normal tasks.

Sleep disorders also frequently accompany Fibromyalgia. While patients with this condition do not necessarily have difficulty in going to sleep, they do not appear to enjoy deep sleep either, and wake up feeling unrefreshed and tired.

If you have Fibromyalgia, the chances are that you may not be cured completely, but the condition itself is not life threatening or crippling nor does it worsen with time. A proper course of exercise and self-care measures can relieve you of a lot of discomfort and pain.

Apart from pain all over the body, sleeplessness and tiredness, Fibromyalgia may also be accompanied by bowel related problems like constipation or diarrhea, headaches and facial pain and heightened sensitivity to light, noise and even odor.

Causes of Fibromyalgia

The exact causes of Fibromyalgia are still a matter of speculation. Possible candidates include chemical changes in the brain, sleeplessness (there’s a view that sleeplessness may be the cause rather than the effect of Fibromyalgia), injury particularly to the spinal region, infection, nervous system abnormalities and changes in metabolism.

Are you prone to Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia seems to affect certain groups more than others. Women are more prone to the disease than men. People in their youth or middle age are affected more than children or the elderly. Sleep disorders and rheumatic diseases also seem to be associated with the condition. You are also more prone to the problem, if you have a family history.

How can you know whether you have Fibromyalgia?

It’s difficult because even doctors can’t know for certain. They make you go through a series of tests that eliminate other problems, and then apply certain guidelines like the period of time and the spread of your pains to conclude about the probability that the problem could be Fibromyalgia. As far as you are concerned, it is better that you see your doctor if you experience general pain all over your body, and fatigue, that last over a long period.

Treatment of Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia usually doesn’t lead to other complications, but can leave the affected person depressed, frustrated and unable to maintain her relationships.

Treatment of the condition focuses on pain relief, curing depression and sleeplessness and relaxing the muscles. To this end analgesics, anti-depressants and muscle relaxants may be prescribed. In some cases sleeping pills may also be used for a limited period of time.

What you can do for yourself in Fibromyalgia?

There’s a lot that you can do yourself to effect relief and possible cure. Stress reduction is a general step that you can take to cure a number of conditions, and it helps with Fibromyalgia too. There are a number of ways to control and reduce stress like relaxation techniques, deep breathing exercises and meditation. You can select and practice whatever suits you best. Regular exercise (even if it is painful in the beginning), a healthy lifestyle, and moderate activity that suits you are other things that will help you. Getting a better quality of sleep may also be in your hands to a great extent. Regular habits like going to bed and rising at the same time everyday, maintaining a conducive environment to sleep and avoiding stimulants like caffeine and alcohol before going to bed can help you in improving the quality of your sleep.
