What Is Cystitis?

Cystitis is a disease due to urinary infection and it is characteristically occurs mainly in woman of age groups 30 to 50 years. But it can affect both genders in all age groups It is an inflammation of the bladder involving urethra, the tube that drains urine from the bladder. Cystitis is a disabled condition associated with urinary frequency and urgency and severe pelvic pain. There is high risk in elderly women and men to be affected by cystitis.

Cystitis is bacterial infection, the growth of bacteria causes inflammation in the inside wall of the bladder. Inflammation is the common sign and symptom of cystitis and it leads to further identification of the disease. Cystitis does not: cause cancer but leads to serious kidney disease though the individual appears to be healthy.

The Causes of cystitis

Bacterial infection is the main cause of cystitis. Nearly about of 90% of cause of cystitis is due to the bowel bacteria, E coli. The bowel contains full of bacteria from the intestines. Many bacteria are found to be harmless and live generally on the skin surface of the perineum.

Urine in the bladder seems to be sterile and contains few bacteria. The germs that enter the bladder are usually washed away while urination. The immune system of the body has natural germ fighting substances and capability to eliminate alien organisms from the bladder’s lining.

Infection occurs when bacteria get into the urinary tract system and start multiply faster the body’s natural defense mechanism or through urination the bacteria may be removed.

Women are much prone to cystitis because the bowel opening is quite near to the urethra. Therefore there is possibility of the urethra to get contaminated with bowel germs; the bacteria can travel faster into the bladder through urethra, which soon causes inflammation.

Careless and unsafe sexual intercourse can also initiates bacterial infection.
The women wipe carelessly and wrongly from back to front after a bowel movement, this can cause infection so it is advisable to wipe from front to back.

Why do cystitis occurs more in Women more easily than Men?

Women are more prone to cystitis because women’s urethral opening is much near to the anus than men. It makes easier for the germs to pass from bowel area to the opening of urethra.  A woman's urethra is also much shorter in comparison to a man.

  • Urethra in a woman is about 1 and 1/2 inches long.
  • Urethra in a man is around 8 inches long.

Why all do not get attack by cystitis?
A normal and healthy human being harbors different types of bacteria and varieties of organisms but the body’s natural defense mechanism usually maintain by checking them.

If the body's natural defenses become weak and overwhelmed then the germs and bacteria can multiply faster and can cause infection.

What can one do to keep away from the cystitis’ attack?

Generally, older people and pregnant women, and people with suffering from diabetes must seek medical care and advice as soon as they symptoms of cystitis occurs.

For other individuals, simple bouts of cystitis often go away on their own within a two or three days, especially if they take conscious steps to get free from cystitis infection.

Going often to the bathroom for urination helps wash the germs and bacteria out of the infected bladder. To keep the bladder full and clean one must drink plenty of water or other kinds of fluid. One must avoid alcohol and coffee, which irritate the bladder. One should drink 10 ounces of fluid every half- hour then helps in reducing the inflammation. Drinking cranberry or blueberry juice helps to get rid the bladder of infection more quickly. Vitamin C intake should be increased such as pineapples, tomatoes and leafy green vegetables. These conscious steps can help in getting rid of cystitis infection.
