Breast Feeding Tips and InformationNow most people in the world know that breast feeding is actually what’s best for the newborn, even though it is not physically possible for some women. Most people believe that the reason for this is the fact that the mother’s body knows what the child needs and is able to more readily produce it when the time is right. If you can manage to breast feed then it is best for the child because of the basic nutrients that are present in the mother’s milk that is not actually there in some of the formulas that are currently on the market. These products are fine for the child and will do no harm but the fact is that they are not as good as the mother’s milk for the feeding of the child. Early On... in Breast FeedingWhen the mother first starts to lactate she actually produces a substance other than milk. A thick and creamy substance called colostrum is produced which contains the vital nutrients that the child needs in the early days of life. The reason that actual milk is not produced right away is the fact that a newborn’s digestive system is still very basic for the first few weeks after birth. When you take into consideration that milk and all other lactose based products are difficult to digest you understand why the mother does not provide milk in the early stage of feeding from the breast. If you are not able to feed directly from the breast then you should express the colostrum into a bottle to feed the child. This is highly important as the child will need these nutrients to grow and the newborn will develop rather quickly as time starts to go on. Frequency in Breast FeedingOne of the things that many new mothers do not know is the frequency that their child should be fed in the early stages of life. When the child is first born he/she will need to be fed in short bursts and very often. More than likely the child will need to eat at least twice an hour. The reason behind this is the fact that the child is still trying to make the digestive system work and they can not take a lot of food at one time, so they must take several very small meals over a period of time. Naturally this can be stressful for the mother but it is completely necessary for the child to continue to feed like this for the first few weeks. Once the child learns to eat larger and be full then the frequency will start to wain. After the first two weeks of Breast FeedingAfter the child has been breast fed for the first two or so weeks the amount of time that it will spend on the breast will greatly reduce. In the most common occurrence you will see that the child will cut the amount of times that it feeds by at least half after a couple weeks. This is the time when the mother’s milk starts to thin and take on a more milk like consistency. This is still the best food for the child and more over the child will actually need it now more than ever. The child is growing at an extraordinary rate and the digestive system is becoming more and more advanced with each passing day. You will also notice that the child is staying on the breast for a longer period of time. As the stomach begins to stretch out the child will need more food per feeding to become full. It is important that you do not allow the child to stay on the feeding for too long as that can lead to a lot of problems which include weight gain. What others have contributed to this page?
