Grief Loss and Bereavement

Introduction to death and bereavement:

Death and bereavement is a natural phenomenon. Death is a part of life and each person who has taken birth will die. The loss of a loved one in our family is most stressful moment and causes major mental or emotional changes.

Some of the most common emotions experienced by people during or after death of closed family member include confusion, shock, sadness, anger, humiliation and despair. These may be initial reactions to loss. However the intensity and durations of these emotions may also vary. You may also feel loneliness and weak mental health.

Grief and Mourning:

The deaths of a loved one cannot be forget easily. You go through the phase of grief and mourning. The traditional process and sharing your thoughts about the loved one are also happens simultaneously. Mourning may last few months to years.

Physical and psychological Expression:

During grief, crying may be a physical expression while depression and other emotional expressions may be psychological in nature. You should allow coming out all your feelings and should share the feelings with friends and relatives.

If you try to suppress your feelings, these feelings will cause some physical and psychological disorders at a later stage. You cannot avoid grieving for a longer period and these feelings should be resolved as early as possible.

Symptoms associated with grief:

The physical symptoms reported include stomach pain, diarrhea, intestinal disorder, loss of energy and sleep disturbance are associated with grief. If you are already ill, your physical condition may worsen and sometimes other new symptoms may develop.

Some psychological disorders such as depression, anxiety and thoughts of suicide are also with emotional grief.

Expressing Grief:

Once a closed person leaves us, it is quite natural to experience grief in such a situation. We should not suppress our feelings and we should allow our self to grieve. Some of the following are effective methods of coping up with grief.

  • Express your feeling: You should express about your feelings, it will give you mental and physical ability to cope up with grief.
  • Accept Death: You should accept that the loved is no more and you have to live now with out him or her.
  • Maintain your health: You should maintain your health and should carry out regular check up from your family doctor. You should take regular food and rest and over dependence on medicine and alcohol may cause further health problem.
  • Seek out side help: If you are unable to cope up with the grief, take help from professionals. There are many such organizations ready to help to bereaved people. These organization provides counseling and support to bereaved people.

Grief loss and bereavement Helping People:

You can also help some one, who has lost loved one in the family by providing him help in the following way.

  • By sharing the feelings of loss and encouraging them to talk about their feelings and memories of the lost person.
  • You should allow the grieving person to talk about deceased person and listen to him.
  • You may also help in other day-to-day job such as arranging foods, baby sitting etc.
  • You should encourage the bereaved person to take professional help if you think that the person is not able to cope the grief.�
