Facts about abortion, Information, Side effects, pro & cons of abortion - Types of abortion

Introduction:

Abortion is commonly understood induced abortion and it is defined in medical terms as miscarriage or induced termination of an embryo during pregnancy and thus causing its death.

Definitions of abortion in Medical Terms:

(1) Miscarriage or spontaneous abortion:

When miscarriage happens due to natural causes or accident.

(2) Therapeutic Abortion:

Abortion carried out with the aim to protect woman’s life, physical or mental health. Abortion was performed, as there was a possibility of a child born with severe health risk or congenital disorders.

(3) Elective Abortion:

Abortion was carried out for any other reason not mentioned above.

Common Forms of Induced Abortion:

An induced abortion generally depends the gestation age of the fetus. Sometimes the preference of doctor or patient under these circumstances becomes the choice. Nearly three decades earlier the famous Roe V. wade decision granted abortion a legality in the U.S., the public debates is still continue over condemnation of abortion or abortion as choice.

Some of the common methods used for induced abortion include surgical abortion, chemical abortion, abortion by herbs and abortion by force applied to abdomen.

The last two method of abortion should be avoided as these are the risky methods and may cause serious side effects and can harm to vital internal organs.

Surgical Abortions:

  • During the first fifteenth weeks of pregnancy, the embryo can be removed by vacuum suction with the help of syringe (Manual Vacuum Aspiration, MVA) or an electric pump (Electric Vacuum Aspirator, EVA).
  • From fifteenth week onward and up to twenty sixth week, the embryo can be destroyed by opening cervix and applying suction. This technique is known as Dilation and Evacuation (D&E).
  • Dilation and Curettage is another standard procedure and should be applied only when MVA (Manual Vacuum Aspiration) is not available.

Chemical / Medical Abortion:

The abortion is carried out with the help of chemicals or medicines particularly effective during first trimester of pregnancy.

Abortion with help of herbal medicines:

Since ancient times herbal medicines are used for terminating pregnancies, but these are not recommended due to their serious side effects.

Sex Selective Abortion:

In some parts of Asia, sex selective abortion is in practice and sex of fetus is determined before terminating the pregnancy. The sex determination is carried out usually be ultrasound and another procedures, if found not preferable, pregnancy is immediately terminated. This practice has been carried out in some parts of China, India, Taiwan and South Korea. In China most of the parents wants that first male child should take birth in the family. Although the law prohibits identifying and revealing sex of fetus by any physician, female infanticide lingers.

In India due to various factors such as economic, socio cultural or religious reasons, the termination of pregnancy for undesired sex were carried out in past. In 1994, Indian government banned pre-natal sex screening and in 2002 banned sex selective abortion.

Side effects of Abortion:

Various side effects of abortion has been proposed including increased risk of breast cancer and negative mental health, but no clinical evidence to prove either breast cancer or negative mental health such as depression, stress, anxiety or mental illness occurs.

Unsafe Abortion:

Due to various factors and unavailability of suitable pregnancy termination methods, women sometimes adopt risky and unsafe methods. Abortion should be carried out under standard sanitation and professionalism as prescribed by WHO.

If abortion is not carried out in a safe manner, it may cause sepsis, hemorrhage and even can damage important vital important organs.
